Interesting. But in this economy not surprising. If Best Buy does this regularly which they do, then I guess anybody can and will.

What doesnt make sense is 'why they do it'....If your Best Buy, Costco or any other store, returned items are the responsibilty of whoever makes the product...

If you buy that SHARP TV from COSTCO and return it, COSTCO DOESNT EAT A LOSS, SHARP DOES.

So, all I can think of is the makers of these products give incentives, discounts or whatever to resellers who have a 'low return rate'....cant think of any other valid reasons for sellers to resell returned items as new.......But again, like I said, I watch Best Buy do this all the time so if they do it then I guess anybody will do the same......

Shame too, as it not only hurts the customer who bought a used item only to find out its not new but I doubt that customer will be too happy with the store/seller and doubly so, im sure they'll tell all their friends'Bought a NEW tv from xxxx...got it home..opened it up..only to find it it was used/somebody elses reject'...

Bad news spreads quickly.....If I were in your shoes, not only would the TV go back to Costco and their corporate folks contacted, you can rest assured i'd tell everybody about my experience in the hopes they can avoid getting the shaft...If we the 'customer' dont fight back, so to speak, we will keep getting screwed...yet it is we the customer who allows sellers to keep their doors open by buying from them......If we the 'buyer' take action, then we the 'buyer' have the upper hand....Best Buy knows this yet doesnt seem to care..Here in my area everybody knows they do this and tons and tons of people in my area will never walk in to another Best Buy ever again since they know what deceptive practices they use to shaft the customer.....

Rec'd double boxed HP TP with the slipcase.
Both items spanking brand new & unopened.
Inner brown shipping box has marked out
"COSTCO ITEM FB489A"
HPTouchPad 32GB Wifi Bundle with sleeve
Model Number (1P)FB489A#ABL
Search on web indicates that they returned
their units to HP instead of doing fire sale
and issues involved with that process.

Well, even though I hadn't gotten a shipping notice yet, my box came in the mail today with my brand spankin' new HP Touchpad 32gb.

After messing with webOS for a little while, I decided

A) This operating system is actually very slick, and I like it.
B) There is not nearly as app support, especially free apps, as there are for Android.

So I installed Android, specifically Cyanogen Mod 9. When I start the machine, I am given the option to boot into webOS or Android, so I can still use webOS if I want to. If you can follow step-by-step instructions, you should be good to do the same. These are the three main sources I used (and I suggest for new Android modders that you watch/read all three):

http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HP_Touchpad:_Full_Update_Guide
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/18843-releasealpha2-cyanogenmod-9-touchpad/

Special note: Be sure if you are installing CM9 to use ACMEInstaller2 (and type ACMEInstaller2 instead of ACMEInstaller when you have that one command-prompt line)!

Who ships for this company? How reliable are they with the shipping times?

No shipping notice for me either. Should I be worried?

I'd say don't worry. I hadn't received a shipping notice either, then a few hours ago one popped up. I checked the tracking number and the package is already out for delivery to my house. I don't know why it took them so long to send the notice, but I'll trade slow notices for fast delivery any time.

got mine. called support. tablets are showing purchase date of last year, which means no 90 day support and 100 days left on the warranty. i'm trying to straighten it out with HP, but this is a pain in the butt. i had to fax woot proof of purchase to HP. still waiting to hear back to see if they're going to reset the clock on the warranty.

these are tablets from Costco, btw, which was posted earlier. very strange situation indeed.

will keep you posted. if i don't get a full warranty i'm sending back to woot.

Update: 6:45PM PST
HP support received my faxed proof of purchase and extended the warranty to start on April 15, 2012 - so the woot receipt was sufficient. Based on the treatment I received today (was very difficult dealing with these guys) I don't hold a lot of hope that we'll have good support for hardware issues (see the webos forums on the case cracking incidents).

After several attempts at trying to get it to work (even after using HP's tech support), I finally sent it back to Woot. In fact, I just got my money back on Friday.

Despite all that, I'm in for one today. From reading the comments from before, it seemed that most people had no problems, but a handful of people just got bad ones. This one will be new, and I'm confident it will work this time.

I got mine today, which has to be some kind of record for my Woot purchases. Recognized my network right away. It works perfectly. Thanks Woot!

By the way, I'm posting on it now.

What I read is that during the fire sale, Costco sent them back to HP rather than participating in the price plummit.

No, it can take 5 days for us to get the stuff out of the warehouse. If you don't see movement by about Thursday, then send an email to service@woot.com.

Also, you can use FedEx's “Track by Reference” feature to get tracking info using your order number. Your order number is on your receipt which you can get via My Account. Leave the Account Number blank. Enter your order number in the reference box. Next, select your country and enter your zip code. Click TRACK and voilà, you may have tracking info.

Sometimes that works better than the tracking number for some reason.

Received mine today. Can't believe it arrived so quickly! I'm digging WebOS but I'll probably do the CM9 thing soon.

Received mine Sat 4/21. Don't see anything referencing Costco on it. WebOS worked great and I was immediately able to update WebOS over the wifi.

Day 2, I did the ICS CM9 install, but it did not go totally smooth. ICS installed and intial Wifi setup went fine, but when I tried to shut it down, I could not. Holding down the power button til me finger turned blue did nothing. No shut down screen ever appeared. Searched the web and found the only workable solution for me was to hold down the power button while pressing the home button 10 times.

The next problem was upon the next startup after the initial ICS install/setup. Wifi would no longer work in ICS. The shutdown screen did work though, but if I selected "shutdown", it would reboot instead. The only way I can shut it down from ICS is from the WebOS/ICS boot menu (after reboot)and you gotta be quick because you have only 5 seconds from the start of the boot selection screen or you go straight to ICS again. Oh .. back to the wifi. Wifi would show it was on, sometimes it would not, but nothing would connect either way. Also, once when shutting down the TP from ICS, my D-Link wifi router stopped working and had to be rebooted to get it working again. Fortunately these all are documented issues on the Cyanogenmod forums and a solution was at hand.

My wifi router had been manually set to channel 11, and apparently the ICS mod has issues with that. They suggest using a low channel, like 1. I did that and the ICS wifi worked like a charm. Shutdown is still an issue though.

Don't be so bummed! I'm sending you a PM with your tracking info! Hooray!

Just as a precaution, you may want to check your junk mail folder to see if the tracking email went there by accident.

That said, I'm tempted to get one for the chance to play with WebOS. Android and iOS have a terrible terrible multitasking story, and I'm tempted to try an alternative. I don't need a market full of games, as much as decent email and browser.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for technologically superior also-rans. /sheds a tear for Amiga

I've had mine since the firesale last August. Love it. Email and browser are in some ways better than any I've seen in Android. I do have dual boot on mine, with Cyanogen Ice Cream sandwich. Runs very stable, easy to download, and gives access to many Android apps. Camera and mike don't work, but boot back to WebOS for that.

I've not had any of the issues with shut down, wifi, or rebooting in Android the others have had. I did download a Preware app that allows you to change default boot back to WebOS, and change the time the boot menu shows.

Be mindful, installing Cyanogen may void HP's excellent warranty service.

Sigh. After two months, my delightful daughter broke the charger on it. Bought a new charger for it, but by the time we got it, the battery fully discharged. Now, all we get is a big white battery icon with a question mark.

Of course, I installed Android on it, so when I contact HP for warranty support, they won't touch it, even though the web is full of pages talking about how common this hardware problem is. Out-of-warranty service starts at $235, which is only $20 less than I paid for it at Woot in the first place.
